First of all let's start with a question why you should move your ps4 games to the external hard disk?

The Playstation 5 offers 825GB of SSD storage which sounds good right!! But actually we can make use of only 650 GB after some storage consumed by the system. If you look at the latest gen console games like Spiderman Miles Morales, Assassins Creed Valhalla and Call of Duty : Black Ops Cold War these games takes a behemoth amount of space for installing only three games. Also if you don't want to give up the previous gen games the storage becomes completely filled.

So, moving the Ps4 games to the extended storage is the only wise option.

[ You may wonder!! moving the Ps5 games will be still a great option instead of moving PS4 games. Come on my mate!! Sony does not allow you to share the ps5 games to the extended storage till the date. ]

[ Before seeing the steps, I would recommend you to take a backup of the external storage if it has some important files or else using a new External disk would be perfectly fine !! ]

Here are the steps :
  • Connect your External storage disk to the PS5 console.
  • Now navigate to "Settings" and click "Storage".
  • Click the "Extended storage" and select "Format as Extended storage".
  • Now click "Yes" on the warning.
That's it you're done. Your External storage disk is now formatted and finally your PS4 games can find a place in the External Hard disk or SSD.

When you download a new PS4 game it will be automatically installed in the external storage disk. You can also turn off this feature by :
  • Navigate to "Settings" page and click "Storage".
  • Then select "Extended storage".
  • Now "Turn off" the "Always Install PS4 Games to Extended Storage" feature.
Now any PS4 game that you install will be stored in the in-built PS5's SSD and it will not be stored in the Extended storage.

Currently Sony has not given the update to expand the storage using M.2 SSD but at least we can be happy that they are giving support for playing the PS4 games on PS5 using external hard disk.
